An icon disappears...

Walt Disney World Company wants additional room to add new attractions to the park Hollywood Studios, but there is no place to put the new attraction unless you take old ones away. So, in order to make more room for the upcoming attractions, the company has decided to remove the famous park icon.

It was announced October 24th that the 122- foot tall structure will be gone by early 2015. Many people support the removal of the icon, saying that it does not “suit” the theme of the park and blocks tremendous view of the Chinese theater. Mickey Mouse’s blue sorcerer hat can be seen in the famous Walt Disney production of “Fantasia” and was installed just as a “focal point.” From the beginning, people have not supported the installation of the hat. Hollywood Studio’s theme is said to follow the “golden age” of the 1920s, 30s, and 40s and the sorcerer hat does not seem to follow that theme.

I, personally, do not know a life without walking into the park and seeing the large hat at the end of the street. I am a little upset seeing the hat go but knowing Disney, it will be replaced by something ten times better. People from all over the United States and even the world come to see the great icon. Opening in 2001, the hat has had thirteen amazing years of being the icon of the Hollywood Studios.

  1. This was an interesting post! I like how you explained the meaning of the structure to the park itself, others, and yourself. You observed and discussed both sides of the situation with fairness, while still adding your own opinion. The picture helped me visualize the object you were describing, and adding the height in your summary aided me in truly understanding the visual affect. Though this icon is important to you, you are being reasonable and considering that the company will not only make up for the loss, but will replace it with something even better. Please continue to write interesting posts.

  2. You mentioned, “I am a little upset seeing the hat go but knowing Disney, it will be replaced by something ten times better”. I agree with you. I am so use to going to Hollywood Studios and seeing that big blue hat as soon as you walk in. It will be weird going there and not seeing this world known icon. However, I agree that Disney will replace it with another fun piece of art or a ride that will have a bigger effect on all of the people who love the Disney parks. I hope it’s a roller coaster ride.
Did you know the big blue sorcerer hat could still be seen at Magic Kingdom? The lovers of the sorcerer hat, can still enjoy this icon at Magic Kingdom. I hope they are not planning to replace this one too.
